Rev. Enjo Ito rented a room of Yamagata Hotel and started missionary work in 1902. The same year, he built a temple and a Japanese school. This was the beginning of Kurtistown Jodo Mission known at that time as Olaa Bukkyo Kaido. 
Kurtistown Jodo Mission is located on the foot of Kilauea Volcano, looking towards the city of Hilo.
