Rev. Senri Soma rented a room from a bakery in Hakalau Camp and began teaching Japanese in 1904. Later that same year, he built a Jodo Mission and a school in the present location. The present Temple and parsonage were constructed when Rev. Ryokai Yamanaka served there.
In recent years with the consolidation of the sugar companies, the Hakalau Sugar Mill closed its operation in nearby Pepeekeo. Today, the Mission stands alone in the midst of an abandoned plantation camp site but the members continue to attend services at the Hakalau Jodo Mission.
